The
entire people of Akwa Ibom State are disappointed with gross inefficiency and
total corruption among the legislators. Matters had deteriorated to a situation
whereby the legislators are no more representing the people, rather the
Governor.
Thanks to the peaceful people
of the state for exercising such a great restraints, patience and self
discipline for so long in the face of glaring corruption, although such display
of patience in the face of unsatisfactory situation, were hoping that wiser
council and intellectuals will eventually prevail in order for them to be
brought back to the path of reasoning, but to no avail. The legislators who supposed to help the
state to grow became completely inaccessible, many people who watched the sad
deterioration of affairs in the state are fired with the zeal of patriotism and
made numerous attempts to correct them but all futile. The legislators for so long made a cancerous
growth to exist, eating the heart of the state, making the death of the state
inevitable.
I think the only possibility
of ensuring safety lies in the rigorous application of knife to exercise the
malignant disease from the dirty politics of the legislators. Amidst surgical exercise. Quiet whisperings soon will give way to loud
grumbling and ominous signs have begun to manifest themselves. Matters should not be allowed to continue in
this manner, even though their tenure is a waste because no principal
achievement that contributed to the social economic and political advancement
has been made.
They failed the state on
those very issues which the state regarded as key to its future and economic
greatness, having failed the state in respect of these things, the state lost
no time and are justified to openly regard their tenure as a period of waste
and fruitless representation and they cannot tilt any balance of success. Had they taken firm steps to fight corruption
and not a partaker and quit any person or persons who had outstayed the state
usefulness, the story today would be different, but they failed. Napoleon Bonaparte, after he had been
captured and exiled to the Island of St.
Helena, murmured aloud that much is
forgiven to those who succeed but the greatest sin that the world will never
forgive is failure. Legislators must
sometimes hurt, in order to do justice, for them to retain the confidence and
respect of their followers. They have to
show themselves as firm and sometimes even ruthless, the given instances of
indecision and broken promises are enough; they existed side by side with them,
a flagrant display of affluence and open demonstration of corruption in high
places.
Corruption within the lawmakers
had reached such a pitch, that remedy could not be found. The whole issue of evil representation had
become ridiculous and a most vexatious matter, they gave a clear impression
that the executive Governor is the master while they are servants, now the
principle of check and balances are no more working, issuing of brown envelop
or Ghana must go have been taken to an epochal height and to an unparalleled
degree in the history of the state. When
history of the state comes to be written, there would not be a doubt that
historians will not fail to recognize the fact that the deed of legislators
between 2007 to 2015 was the contributory factor that leads to the downfall of
the state.
Failure
to keep faith with the people is in no way reassuring especially as the state
had come to see through them that they could never correct their ills. The
assessment of the situation as of now is that it will be utterly irresponsible
to leave the state as it is without responsibility to lay the foundation of
collective sustaining democracy that can stand the test of time even though the
legislators are threat to the state continued existence.
The
reason is that they have denied the youngsters the opportunity to seek the
truth and also immerse their minds into fraudulent mold, which narrows and
excludes good orientation and enlightenment.
Their representation reflect no hopeful expectation, hence the effort of
the electorate has been completely divorced, even though in a little while they
will begin to express their concern regarding the impending and threatening
dangers.
My advice to the electorate is
that they should not keep legislators words in mind or lure themselves into a
sleep of false dreams, if I may ask the following questions; how many souls
have been ruined? How much blood has
been spilled? How many people have been
sucked dry? It is terrible to
contemplate all these. Legislators are
not ready to risk life for the truth and righteousness like reformers of the
past rather, they support the government who inflict and cause harm to the
opposition, or those in the slightest degree who refused to align to a
structure that is laid with a rotten foundation. Human rights activist have sung loudly, their
ears itch, they sing it with resonant voice. May God illuminate the day of
Christ return.
