The Akwa Ibom State Track and Field Association is set to reposition athletics in the state to new heights of excellence.
At the inaugural meeting of the association held in Uyo on Monday, the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Track and Field Association, Mr. Nsentip Akpabio emphasized the need to re-position track and field which had over the years been pushed to the rear in sports development.Mr Nsentip Akpabio called on prominent individuals, multi-national organizations to partner in developing athletics as it had provide world champions like Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare currently ranked fourth in the world in the 100metres women.
He charged the Akwa Ibom State Track and Field Association members to work as a team even as he promised to donate a new bus for the association before the end of the month to ease the transportation challenges of the state athletes and a donation of N1million for the camping exercise of the state contingent for the forthcoming National Youth Games scheduled for Abuja from the 5th of December, 2013.
Mr. Nsentip Akpabio stated that the association would sustain grassroot development in Track and Field through regular competition among schools and commended the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief (Dr) Godswill Obot Akpabio for the on-going construction of the Olympic size stadium which when completed would sustain the set standards of excellence in track and field and sports generally.
