Akwa Ibom has added another feather to its cap by getting into the Guinness Book of Records as the state that produced the largest group of Carol Singers in the world. This approval was announced by the Guinness World Records Limited at his headquarters in London after confirming that the Godswill Akpabio Unity Choir, made up of 25, 272 singers, had overtaken the previous record of 15,674 set in Bogota, Colombia, on the 14th of December 2013.
The official attempt which took place at the Uyo township stadium on Saturday, December 13, 2014, was witnessed by representatives of various companies and organizations approved by the Guinness World Records Limited to ensure that the very strict guidelines governing the record attempt were followed.
The record breaking ensemble was made up made up of choristers drawn from over 900 churches and from every nook and cranny of Akwa Ibom State. They were dressed in specially designed shirts approved by the Guinness World Records.
The singers passed through turnstiles that had counting software and each person was counted accurately, under the supervision of verification experts from Alexander Forbes Consulting actuaries.
The guidelines required that the choir sing for at least fifteen minutes without breaks. The choir did a medley of six Christmas Carols namely The First Noel, Joy to the World, O Christmas tree, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Once in Royal David’s City and O Come All Ye Faithful.
In his reaction to this feat, the Permanent Secretary in charge of Protocol in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Aniekpeno Mkpanang, expressed his appreciation to God for granting the state this global recognition.
Mr Mkpanang, who was in London at the time the announcement was made, paid tribute to the Executive Governor of the State, Chief Godswill Akpabio, for facilitating the emergence of the choir as one of the ways of solidifying the ties that bind citizens of the state together.
