Politics has killed Akwa United - Monday Uko

BY EMMANUEL AKPAN

The  Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr.   Monday Uko has attributed the poor form of Akwa United Football Club as well as other sports in the State to politicians who have decided hijacked sports activities, saying until politics is separated from sports before the State will progress in terms of sports.
Monday Uko who was one of the commissioner’s nominees that appeared before the Akwa Ibom State of Assembly for screening and confirmation, made this disclosure while answering questions from members of the House of Assembly last Friday.

Uko noted that some selfish politicians in the State who have no or little idea about sports administration have indicated much interest in affairs of sports especially within the Ministry of Youth and Sports which according to him has not allow the right people to be fix at the right place for the sporting activities to strive well in the Akwa Ibom State.
In his words “Politics has taken over sports administration in the State. A lot of politics is going on in the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Akwa United Football Club in particular, as I am going back to the State Executive Council, if luckily, I am being posted again to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, I will take some decisions without looking back. I will ensure that incompetence people that claim to know everything about sports when they know nothing and little about sports are drop from certain positions. This I will do without and fear or favour.”

Chatting with our reporter shortly after the screening, one of the Akwa United fans who was inside the House of Assembly chamber to witness the screening, Mfon Eyo expressed disappointment over the return of Monday Uko to the State Executive Council. Eyo frowned at the decision why The State Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel decided to re-appoint Monday Uko into the exco, adding that throughout Monday Uko’s tenure as commissioner, he was operating from his private hotel’s office.

According to Eyo “I am surprise that Monday Uko is coming back, and I believe he will be posted again to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Throughout his days as commissioner, he never frequent in the office, he was operating from his private hotel’s office.” he concluded.
