Monday Eyo: A Model of Effective Representation

By nature, Honourable Monday Eyo is a quiet and unassuming person.  His reserved disposition tends to create varied interpretations about his strength and weaknesses, especially by those who may not have the adventurous cravings to venture into the world of the current member representing Uyo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to know him better.

Nevertheless, for those who have had close interactions and interest in assessing his worth interms of political, social and religious participation in the society, so far they have plausible stories to tell about him, which the ignorant or misinformed ones need to know through this piece of commentary.
Hon. Monday Eyo who is from a humble background believes in the great grace of God in destining one’s life. This is why his rise to his present position according to him is God’s will. Those who know him well can attest to the fact that he rarely canvasses or lobbies for privileged positions, nor does he feels any wave of disappointment if any opportunity passes him by. When he had done what is needful to be done, he leaves the rest to God.

Therefore, his entrance into the Uyo State Constituency race in 2015 is borne out of desire to serve his community and give effective representation to reposition constituency because the people who were starved of democratic dividends in the hands of the opposition party representative over the years in the Assembly.

Through the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform, which he mounted to announce his mission he stated clearly a 10-point Agenda to liberate and secure the future of Uyo people through the seat in the State House of Assembly when elected. In keeping with his promise, these agenda have formed his roadmap to achieve set goals.

These points were to organize frequent town hall meetings to abreast his constituents of development in the State Assembly.  So far, apart from briefing the people of Uyo for about three times in his six months in office, Hon. Monday Eyo operates an open door policy where anybody can access him at home or in the office to make enquires. He has regular meetings with elders, youths and other stakeholders to update them on issues

His guardianship of the local government transition committee  in Uyo has ensured that all interest groups are involved in the governance of the local government, especially in the distribution of revenue contracts and appointments in various committees so that peace will reign in Uyo.  This is he has done in fulfillment of his promise to work closing with the local government council for the common good of the people.
Also his relationship with the political appointees or  elected people of Uyo is demonstrated  by his closeness to the stakeholders like the honourable commissioner for housing and Urban renewal, Prince Enobong Uwah; Engr. Dr. Michael Eyong; the member representing Uyo Federal Constituency in the National Assembly and Dr. Grace Ekpo, transition council chairman. The cordial working relationship is a result of the teamwork approach promoted by Hon. Monday Eyo.

He promised scholarship scheme for students, and today he is sponsoring four(4) students reading professional courses in the University of Nsukka, and University of Uyo especially in medicine, engineering etc. This scholarship is for the entire period of their study. The door is still open for more.
Other students enjoy his educational support packages, as he gives academic project allowance and financial grants for the indigents in universities through his intervention scheme.

In terms of the employment, the member has given many employments through his recommendations of qualified applicants of Uyo local government origin. Infact, without any hesitation he issues such request for recommendation letter whenever it is presented, after background checks. Testimonies are abound to confirm.

Hon. Monday Eyo is using his present office and personal relationships as a pad to seek for employment within and outside the state for the unemployed in order to drastically reduce the embarrassing number of qualified but unengaged youths roaming in the streets.

The philosophy of constituency  empowerment conceived by
Hon. Monday Eyo has a different direction and purpose.  He believes that in thriving to up-lift politicians through his constituency office, programme embarked upon must be sustainable and economically life changing.  He has identified the bane of many failed empowerment programmes and does not want to follow the trend of dashing out cars to young unemployment people who will later become burdened by the demands of these automobiles interms of maintenance.
Instead, he has created avenues to support self-employment or engagements in business ventures that will give recipients positive and sustainable economic means to stable livelihood and reposition them well to be in prosperous lanes to acquire desired luxuries later as they advance in their business enterprises.  This is not to say that those in the economic category to be appreciated with cars will not have his attention periodically.
Hon. Monday Eyo through the MDG’s is bringing development to the rural communities in Uyo.  In this regard, two hospitals and a water scheme have been recommended for intervention in rural communities of Uyo.  He is planning to use NDDC, corporate companies and other international agencies to improve the communities. Through these Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) index he will compliment government development efforts.

He is assisting many people in  healthcare area especially those
who are in need of major surgeries, medications and settlement of hospital bills. He maintains retain-ship with a hospital to refer cases to and shoulders the bills. People are benefiting from his humanitarian gesture. He has given free medical support to the elderly, women and children who do not have the means to access medical facilities across communities in Uyo.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
It will be worthwhile to note that the Oku Clan born politician had started a youth skills acquisition programme to give a blank and unconditional platform for youth of Uyo to learn whatever trade or vocation at his expenses even before his election. Today has stepped up the scheme. He plans to launch Skill Development Fund for youths of Uyo soon.

Interms of women development he also initiated empowerment programme for women start their own small-scale businesses. Hon. Monday has assist women through the provision of shops in Uyo Plaza and financial support across the eleven wards of Uyo.

Agricultural enterprise of the indigenes will receive a boost through the agro training programmes and farm inputs, which the member has in his constituency plan to create wealth at the grassroots level. In this scheme, he has supported persons in poultry etc.

LEGISLATIVE EXPECTATIONS
Of course, as the member representing Uyo in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Monday Eyo knows that there are expectations from him to move motions and present bills that will change the future of the local government area, especially, considering the fact that as the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, Uyo has given so much as host and deserves corresponding compensation to augment the socio-economic losses suffered.
Now that tribunal or court distractions are over, he has bills for the Assembly to make laws empowering the state government to create special schemes for the rural communities of Uyo as complementary to the effort of the local government council.

His constituency projects will be a sort of intervention for Uyo
rural infrastructure, which are in sorrowful states. So far, he has taken stock of healthcare facilities, water projects, schools, skills acquisition centers, drainage and electricity projects to tackle in this constituency projects over his tenure across the 4 clans in Uyo.

Through his cordial relationship with the executive governor and the predominant PDP members in the Assembly, Hon. Monday Eyo is bringing to the fore through executive lobbying on the need to accord increased quota of appointments into agencies and boards for Uyo indigenes. He is one of the believers in the Dakada philosophy of the administration, as such deserves the ears of the governor,

However, all these plausible intentions can only come to fusion if the people of Uyo talk as a united force with one voice through Hon. Monday Eyo, who is ready and willing to give selfless service to recapture the lost glory of the local government area, so that anywhere Uyo persons are present there will be the required respect which they duly deserve as landlords of the state.
So, as the people begin a new legislative experience with Hon. Monday Eyo, all that is required from them is to purge out the spirit of blackmail, propaganda and opposition and join hands with the honourable member to embrace the Great Grace project that has berthed in Uyo.
