No fewer than 50 indigent sick people of
Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Areas Akwa Ibom State, on Friday received
free medical treatment on various ailments, courtesy of Doctor Ekanem Friday John, a renowned
philanthropist.
The free medical treatment included x-ray and diagnosis,
provision of drugs and surgery while some patients received cash for feeding
and transportation.
Dr. Ekanem said the gesture was a
regular annual event of his medical outfit as a way of giving out to the
society what God has given to him, adding that government alone cannot provide
medical care for the elderly and children.
The Esit Eket born medical practitioner
who is vying for the chairmanship position in the forth-coming Local Government
Election in Esit Eket said some deaths would have been preventable if the poor
had access to free medical care.
He maintained that due to lack of money
to procure drugs, some sick persons suffering from mere Malaria resort to
native concoction thereby endangering their lives while others go to prayer
houses for treatment.
Dr. Ekanem assured that if given the
mandate to serve his people as Chairman of Esit Eket Local Government Area, he will prioritize health and
empowerment of the people alongside infrastructural development.
The philanthropist commended Governor
Udom Emmanuel for paying attention to human development while calling on corporate
organizations to assist government in his effort to diversify the economy.
“Corporate organizations such as Mobil
Producing Nigeria Limited should venture into merchandised farming as a way of
assisting the country get out of the present food challenges facing the
populace”, he said.
He called on beneficiaries of his free
medical programme to feel free to come back to his hospital anytime they are
faced with health problems, adding that the programme is only meant for only
those who cannot afford to pay for medical bills.
